Dogs can use outdoor kennels year-round in temperate climates with the right kennel setup — the kennel must be fully weatherproof, well-insulated, elevated off the ground, bedded with warm clean bedding, and sized appropriately. In cold climates below freezing, an insulated or heated kennel is essential. It is important that dogs have sufficient outdoor cold tolerance for your climate — short-haired, small, elderly, very young, or unwell dogs should not be kennelled outdoors in cold weather regardless of kennel quality. All outdoor dogs should have fresh water that doesn't freeze and be checked regularly.

Insulate an outdoor kennel by ensuring: walls have insulation built in or added with foam panels, the floor is elevated off the ground and lined with a thick waterproof insulated mat, the entry is fitted with a flexible flap that retains heat while allowing entry and exit, and the house is sized appropriately so the dog's body heat can warm the interior. Add clean straw or thick blankets inside for the dog to burrow into during very cold nights. For extreme cold, a low-wattage pet-safe heating pad can be placed under the floor mat — never use human-grade electric heaters in dog kennels.

Measure your dog at the shoulder (height) and nose-to-tail (length). Add 20–25cm to each measurement for minimum house width/depth and height respectively. The house should allow full standing, turning, and lying stretched out. Avoid choosing a house that is much larger than these minimums for outdoor use in cold weather — a house that is too large cannot be warmed by the dog's body heat and will feel cold regardless of external insulation. Check each product's specific size recommendations as sizing conventions vary between styles and materials.
