Warm-toned bulbs (2700–3000K) make everything appear more golden and flattering in the mirror but cause makeup to appear heavier or differently toned in natural light. A mirror with adjustable colour temperature that allows switching between warm and daylight is the most versatile option for accurate application in all seasons and environments.

1x (no magnification): for overall makeup assessment, blending, and applying products to large areas of the face. 3x: gentle magnification that works well for most makeup application tasks including eye makeup for those with good close-up vision. 5x: the most popular magnification for precision eye makeup work — liner, lash application, brow shaping — and skincare detail. Provides sufficient detail without the extreme close-up view that makes spatial judgement difficult. 7x–10x: very high magnification for precise skincare work, tweezing, and very fine detail tasks. Not recommended for makeup application — the extreme magnification makes it difficult to assess colour, blending, and overall appearance accurately. A double-sided mirror with 1x and 5x surfaces is the most versatile choice for combined overall application and detail work.

Position the mirror so the centre of the reflection is at exactly eye level when in your normal makeup application position — seated for a vanity setup, standing for a bathroom counter. Light should come from the front, not from behind or above the mirror — backlighting creates silhouetting that makes colour assessment impossible, and overhead lighting creates under-eye shadows and nose shadows that make blending assessment inaccurate. Avoid positioning mirrors on surfaces where daylight from a window behind you enters the mirror — this creates glare that makes the reflection darker and harder to see clearly.
