Yes — multiple studies and widespread owner experience confirm that cat water fountains significantly increase daily water intake in most cats. The flowing water movement instinctively signals freshness and safety to cats — an evolutionary preference developed in their desert-dwelling ancestors for whom moving water was the safest hydration source. Many cats that appear chronically under-hydrated from static bowl drinking will drink voluntarily and frequently from a fountain once introduced to it.

Clean the water fountain weekly. Completely empty and disassemble all removable parts. Wash all components in warm soapy water using a small brush to reach all crevices in the pump housing, bowl, and reservoir. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before reassembly. Replace the activated carbon filter monthly. Descale monthly with a white vinegar solution if you live in a hard water area — dissolve scale deposits that reduce pump efficiency and harbour bacteria. Never put stainless steel or plastic components in the dishwasher without confirming they are dishwasher-safe.

Cats should drink approximately 40–60ml of water per kilogram of body weight daily. A 4kg cat needs roughly 160–240ml per day. Cats on wet food receive significant moisture from their food and may drink less water — cats on exclusively dry food need to drink considerably more to compensate. Signs of inadequate hydration include lethargy, dry gums, reduced skin elasticity, and concentrated dark-coloured urine. Introducing a water fountain is the single most effective intervention for increasing voluntary water intake in cats.

Gravity water dispensers are safe and convenient for both cats and dogs. The water in the reservoir remains covered and relatively protected from contamination until it flows into the bowl. The main hygiene consideration is that the bowl area accumulates bacteria and should be cleaned daily, and the reservoir should be fully emptied, cleaned, and refilled every 1–2 days rather than simply topped up. For cats specifically, a circulating fountain is generally preferred as the flowing water is significantly more appealing than the static water in a gravity dispenser bowl.
